Dr. phil., habil., professor of structural change and welfare state in international comparison at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. Prior to this position he was a research associate at the New School for Social Research New York and for many years senior researcher at the Sociological Research Institute at the University of Göttingen (Soziologisches Forschungsinstitut Göttingen, SOFI); he was a fellow at the Hanse Institute for Advanced Study Delmenhorst, visiting professor at the University of Göttingen and visiting scholar at the University of Oldenburg. He is currently also senior researcher at the German Institute of Adult Education Bonn and will be in the winter of 2009/2010 a visiting professor at the University of Vienna.
