Albrecht Sommer

Albrecht Sommer, PhD, was Head of the personal staff of the President at the Regional Office Berlin of the Deutsche Bundesbank until his retirement in November 2024. In this role, he was responsible for analyzing and presenting macroeconomic developments in Germany and the euro area, trends in international financial markets, and the monetary policy of the European Central Bank. He was a frequent guest speaker in seminars and conferences on monetary policy, macroprudential analysis, and the digitalization of payment systems. Furthermore, representing the Deutsche Bundesbank within the framework of international central bank dialogue, he organized and led seminars on these topics across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Central and Eastern Europe. In addition, he served as a lecturer at Freie Universität Berlin and the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) for many years. Since his retirement, his research has focused primarily on further developments of the operational framework of monetary policy and the impact of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) on the monetary system.
